Painting by Staci D BlackThe top four reasons why artists fail to make a profit or living on their art. There is no lack of a need for high quality original art. In fact It is in high demand. People need art for their living rooms, dining rooms, offices, and town halls. They need it for town squares, urban areas, hotels, and pretty much anywhere else that is available to a human being. So why then is it so hard to make a profit or living as a talented artist?

Reason number one is making a profit is business. Art is expression. Business requires profit, art requires emotion. Business requires a market analysis and hard work. The artist almost never does not do a market analysis before working. Remember Michelangelo’s work? He was commissioned. He didn’t just decide one day to create the David. There was a need and he filled it. When you work, try to have your work paid for before you create it. This will take away from expression many artists say! Not so. An artist is an artist like a dog is a dog or the president is the president. If you have artistic ability it will not go away by some fleeting weird reason, It is and should always be at your command. Study what people need and want then get creative and imaginative and fulfill that need. It has been said that the common person is an exceptional judge of art. He has no bias, training or further education on what should be. He just looks at the art and experiences with an open mind, you should too.

Reason number two is artists work too hard on the mental explanation of their art. Art should not be vague and gray, It should make the viewer experience the intended experience. The better the art the easier it should be for a small child to tell you what it means.

Reason three? Publicity! How many artists work on how the public sees them? If you want something you have to work for it. Great publicity rarely comes by accident. If you want it you must work on it. Which will be the subject of another article.

Reason four is advertisement. Advertisement comes after publicity, but it is still very necessary. Places like eBay and etsy are great for publicity and advertisements.
